Background of the study
Political education programs are essential tools for enhancing civic engagement by equipping citizens with the knowledge and skills necessary to participate effectively in local governance. In the Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, these programs aim to demystify political processes, promote critical thinking, and foster active citizenship. Through workshops, seminars, and community outreach initiatives, political education efforts have been shown to increase voter awareness, participation, and accountability (Ekwueme, 2023). Enhanced civic engagement not only strengthens democratic institutions but also leads to improved public service delivery and local development (Ibeh, 2024). This study investigates the impact of political education programs on civic engagement in local governance, examining how educational interventions influence citizens' involvement in decision-making processes and community development. By integrating empirical data and stakeholder perspectives, the research aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the role of political education in fostering an informed and active citizenry (Okon, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized benefits of political education programs, civic engagement in the Ikot Abasi Local Government Area remains suboptimal. Challenges such as limited access to quality political education, socioeconomic barriers, and low public awareness hinder the effective participation of citizens in local governance (Agu, 2023). The disconnect between political education initiatives and actual civic engagement suggests that existing programs may not be fully addressing the needs of the community. This study seeks to explore these issues, providing a detailed analysis of how political education influences civic participation and identifying potential strategies to enhance the impact of educational programs on local governance.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of political education programs on civic engagement.
  2. To assess the effectiveness of educational interventions in promoting active citizenship.
  3. To identify challenges and propose recommendations for improving political education initiatives.

Research questions:

  1. How do political education programs influence civic engagement in the study area?
  2. What aspects of political education most effectively promote active citizenship?
  3. What challenges hinder the impact of political education on civic participation?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H1: Political education programs significantly enhance civic engagement.
  2. H2: Effective educational interventions are positively correlated with active citizenship.
  3. H3: Socioeconomic barriers negatively affect the impact of political education on civic participation.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides valuable insights into the role of political education programs in promoting civic engagement in local governance. The findings will help policymakers and educators design more effective educational initiatives, fostering a more informed and active citizenry. The research contributes to efforts aimed at strengthening democratic processes and improving public service delivery in the Ikot Abasi Local Government Area (Udo, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to examining the impact of political education programs on civic engagement within the Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on local governance and educational interventions.
